The name Jasper originates from a Greek word for "spotted stone", referring to its colourful inclusions. Jasper is a form of Chalcedony, which is formed from microscopic Quartz.

Jasper is the opaque variety of Chalcedony and comes in numerous colours. The mineral "impurities" in the Chalcedony make up the stone Jasper.

Chert is an umbrella term for hard, brittle sedimentary rock of crystalline Quartz with chemical base of silica SiO2. Red, brown, reddish-brown and yellowish-brown varieties of Chert are called Jasper.
